New College Library Association's Holocaust Exhibit

Last night was the opening reception of the New College Library Association's Fighting the Fires of Hate - America and the Nazi Book Burning exhibit, in conjunction with the American Jewish Committee.  The exhibit is installed in the Jane Bancroft Cook Library on the New College campus from today through March 30.  It compliments the Dr. Helen N. Fagin Holocaust Collection, which was dedicated to the library in 2008.

The Library Association was honored to have William S. Parsons as the guest speaker.  Bill is the Chief of Staff for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.  The exhibit is on loan from the museum.

About the exhibit, from the program...On May, 1933 university students across Nazi Germany burned thousands of books in an ominous "cleansing" of the "un-German spirit" from German culture....Americans quickly condemned the events as hostile to the spirit of democracy and the freedom of expression.  (This exhibit) explores how the book burnings became a potent symbol in America's battle against Nazism....

Those in attendance included Andy Maass, Carol Seigler, Norma and Sam Savin, Sally Yanowitz, Joel and Sally Lucke Elkes, Jake Hartvigson, Gerri Aaron and Marv Albert, Andy Walker, Dennis Stover, Marty Katz, Dr. Mike Michalson, Sue Jacobson, Steve Miles, Susan Rife, and Michael Minor.
